2013: The Return to Glory

I wish I had some wise words to usher in 2013, but the truth of the matter is I haven't had a full night sleep in about 2.5 years, and this past week has been especially tiresome, with my babies under the weather, and schedules all out of whack due to the holidays.  We'll see who makes it up to midnight tonight- oh...life with two babies!  Instead of wisdom, I will tell you a bit about my plan for the new year.  I have been jokingly referring to 2013 as my 'return to glory' year...and by this I mean physically.  I will NOT be pregnant for the first time in a couple of years, and in about 6 months or so, I will be done nursing.  My body will be mine for the first time in a while, and I plan to get back in shape...a return to glory, if you will.
Now this isn't about weight loss, or getting to the gym.  It's about rekindling my love of moving.  Because here's the thing...I used to be a competitive athlete; lacrosse, distance running, hiking, water skiing, swimming, scuba diving, downhill skiing, tennis.  Once I married and moved to Providence, my priorities shifted and I became super focused on my writing career, and all things creative- sewing, knitting, photography and so on.  I lost my competitive edge.  Add in two babies in just under two years, and well...here we are today.
Being home in Michigan, I have had the chance to browse through old pictures, including these from my 1999 trip to Mount Kilimanjaro.  My dad and I reached the summit of the tallest peak in Africa together when I was 16.  It was an incredible trip, and it called for intense training.  I remember the feeling of being able to hike for hours with a heavy pack on my back, of being able to run for miles without getting winded.  I can still feel the sting of the below-freezing air entering my lungs as I crossed the glacier field en route to the summit.
Realistically, I know I don't have the time to get back to my peak fitness (let's face it, I walk up a flight of stairs, and when I make it to the top, I want to take a nap)...but I want to make an effort.  I found a women's lacrosse league here in Rhode Island.  It begins in the spring, and I plan to be there, with my out-of-date equipment, and tired body.  I might no longer be a spry 16 year-old, but I plan to get back in the game.  Here's to 2013- and all the glory that it holds.  It's going to be a great year.
Thank you for spending precious moments of your day here with me...I love sharing this space with all of you.  It means the world to me that you take the time to visit.  Here are a few of my favorite memories from 2012:

January: Pregnant again, and an amazing trip to London
February: Gorgeous Jamaica
March: It's a BOY
April: Gone to the beach, and the perfect baby shower
May: Brimfield
June: Squam
July: Vikram, our little love, joins the family
August: Brothers, trips to the farm, and my husband becomes a US citizen
September: Vermont
October: NYC in a day, and a BIG birthday bash

Merrymaking

It was such a magical Christmas, full of memories, family, and marvelous food.  Oh how I love this season. It has been snowing for days, which means it was a white Christmas after all.  A quiet blanket of snow covered Michigan, and we snuggled up inside to make cookies, exchange presents, and celebrate together.  I love experiencing the magic of Christmas through the eyes of my boys...seeing their excitement over sugar cookie sprinkles, cuddling with Grandma and Grandpa, running wild with their cousins, and a tree filled with sparkly (delicate) ornaments!
A few highlights from our holiday...
*handmade knits under the tree...this cowl turned out so gorgeous, which made me all the more excited to give it away!
*staying in pajamas all day long, and noses pressed to the glass to watch falling snow.
*a visit to Detroit Garden Works...so inspiring to see the shop decked out for the holidays.
(sorry for the picture overload...but isn't it just the prettiest shop!?)
*a quiet snowy walk in the woods at twilight...all was calm, all was bright.
*getting to change out of my "mom uniform" (that would be yoga pants and sweatshirts) and actually dress up!
*snowy dates at the park and finding the perfect little stone seat to sit and watch the snow fall.
*and finally (I'm so excited I can barely contain it)... the ultimate Christmas gift ever from my husband and dad; a trip to Paris with my mom, fall 2013.  Those sneaky guys...they presented us with a box of macaroons, and an Eiffel Tower ornament. My mom and I just looked at each other in disbelief before letting out squeals of delight!  Oh yes....it was a good Christmas!  So very good!

Holiday Cheer

It doesn't feel much like Christmas this year.  There is no snow on the ground, and there is an overwhelming sense of grief as our nation collectively struggles to comprehend the loss of such precious lives.  And yet, I am trying to embrace and remember the true meaning of Christmas.  This is a time for renewal, hope, family and above all....love.  I took a walk around town yesterday, just before the sun set, and I captured bits of holiday cheer.  It lifted my spirits ever so slightly, and gently reminded me to find the beauty in this season.
And now, a bit of wisdom, care of A Charlie Brown Christmas.  A classic, always and forever.

Charlie Brown: I guess you were right, Linus. I shouldn't have picked this little tree. Everything I do turns into a disaster. I guess I really don't know what Christmas is all about.
[shouting in desperation]
Charlie Brown: Isn't there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?
Linus: Sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about.
[moves toward the center of the stage]
Linus Van Pelt: Lights, please.
[a spotlight shines on Linus]
Linus Van Pelt: "And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, 'Fear not: for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.' And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.'"
[Linus picks up his blanket and walks back towards Charlie Brown]
Linus Van Pelt: That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.
*by the way...i would love everyone to read elizabeth's thoughts here... so well said.
