Drinking My Greens
Nowhere is the shift in seasons more apparent than at the farmers' market. Berries, peaches and tomatoes have long since been replaced with root vegetables, cranberries, apples and greens- every variety of greens you could possibly imagine!
This is a particularly good thing for me right now, as I am trying very hard to incorporate more dark, leafy greens into my diet. I now begin each morning with a green smoothie for breakfast.
Here is my current fave:
1 cup coconut water
1 date
1 heaping tablespoon almond butter
1 frozen banana
1 big handful of greens (I rotate between kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, bok choy and swiss chard)
Blend it all together until it is nice and smooth. Enjoy!
Any great green smoothie recipes you care to share?
Of course no one is perfect, so I will readily admit to swinging by the bakery booth too!
Speaking of markets...I wanted to let my local readers know about a very cool holiday market happening in Providence this coming weekend. I will be out of town, so unfortunately, I will miss it. However, if you're hanging around these parts, be sure to check out Festival Fete's Holiday Market!

Yum! I bet you feel so good having that for breakfast....my favorite is a juice that I try to make a few times a week. It's 2 apples, 1 lemon, 2 inches of ginger, 4 or so stalks celery, 1/2 large cucumber, handful parsley, handful romaine, handful of spinach. The first time I made it all I could think of was grass but I have grown to love it and how I feel! Have you read "Clean" by Alejandro Junger? I can't say enough about it :)
Just a quick question. What is the vegetable in the first picture? It looks like some sort of cauliflower, but I have never seen that variety. Beautiful, whatever it is.
This smoothie sounds delicious! I love anything with coconut water.
I can personally attest to the deliciousness of this smoothie! I'm still thinking about the one you made for me. So good!
This has been my (almost) daily staple this year:
1 cup coconut water
1/3 English cucumber
1/2 avocado
2 tbsp frozen blueberries
Handful of spinach
1 tbsp stevia
1 tsp Spirulina powder
I add the stevia mostly to take the edge of the Spirulina which also makes this smoothie VERY green. It tastes a lot better than it looks and I love it and always feel so great when I start my day this way. But I might be ready for a change and I like the sound of your variation, thank you for sharing that!
Hi Susan- to answer your question, that beautiful veggie is Romanesco!
