Celebrating Earth Day
In what can only be considered a case of sheer good luck (planning had nothing to do with it!), we happened to spend Earth Day at our friend Kate's house. She is an eco-landscaper extraordinaire and her backyard is pretty much the coolest thing around, with four laying hens, and a hive of honeybees calling it home. An inspiring afternoon...to say the least.
Speaking of Earth Day...some thoughts: Although we strive to treat our Earth with a gentle touch year-round...it's always nice to take a day and recommit ourselves to the cause. I have made some changes lately, and it is feeling pretty darn good. I briefly posted a few weeks ago on how I was feeling overwhelmed with STUFF. Since then, I have committed to not buying anything for the next three months (besides food, obviously). It feels incredibly freeing, and it has been pretty amazing to watch our monthly spending decrease drastically. Turns out...we don't really NEED anything. When I feel like buying something, I assess what we have laying around, and 9 times out of 10, we already have something to fit the bill. Interesting...! Less stuff, less packaging, less production of new products, less clutter in our lives, and less littering the planet...all good things! Happy Earth Day, indeed!
*by the way...thank you for all of the helpful comments regarding lead remediation. I am feeling much better now that we have decided to tackle it one window at a time, starting with the nursery, and our bedroom. I will let you know how it goes!

That chicken photo is gorgeous, my dear! :) Happy earth day.
happy Earth day, happy Earth! i support your ambitious goal to take a break from buying stuff for a while (though i'm not that's what our economy needs!). I'm kind of addicted to buying children's books right now... And what about the goods at the art markets featured in your amazing book? Not sure I could resist all of those either :)
